Strong vs. Rich vs. Bold Coffee: What's the Difference?

Coffee enthusiasts often encounter descriptive terms like “rich,” “strong,” “bold,” and “full-bodied” in advertising. These words sound appealing, but their meanings can be confusing and are sometimes interpreted differently depending on who you ask. In specialty coffee, however, these terms are used more precisely to describe a coffee’s overall character—its acidity, body, and flavor profile. Understanding these distinctions can help you choose a coffee that truly suits your taste.

Bold Coffee

The word “bold” is typically used to describe coffee with a powerful, pronounced flavor. This is often associated with darker roasts, which bring out deep notes such as roasted, smoky, or slightly charred flavors.

Some people also use “bold” to imply a stronger brew (more coffee grounds, less water), but in specialty coffee, it more commonly refers to the inherent intensity of flavor rather than how the coffee is prepared.

Strong Coffee

“Strong” relates specifically to how the coffee is brewed, not its roast level or flavor profile. A strong cup of coffee has a higher concentration, achieved by using more coffee grounds relative to water.

For example, espresso is considered strong because it is highly concentrated. On the other hand, coffee made with too little ground coffee will taste weak.

Rich Coffee

When describing coffee as “rich,” people are referring to a sense of fullness in taste. This could come from a combination of flavor depth, body, or even acidity.

While many associate richness with dark roasts, lighter roasts can also be rich if they have vibrant acidity or complex flavors. In short, “rich” doesn’t point to a specific roast—it reflects how satisfying and layered the coffee feels overall.

Full-Bodied Coffee

The term “full-bodied” focuses on texture rather than flavor. It describes how heavy or thick the coffee feels in your mouth.

A full-bodied coffee has a dense, coating sensation, similar to whole milk, while a light-bodied coffee feels thinner, more like skim milk. Since “rich” often implies fullness, a coffee with a full body can also be described as having a rich texture.
